Do you know what are the usual sizes of mattresses and bed linen in hotels?

How to choose the correct size for bed linen

Measurements of mattresses and sheets in hotels and tourist accommodations

If you have a hotel business, it is important that you know this information to offer your customers the maximum comfort and quality. Here we are going to explain how to choose the right size for your hotel sheets, taking into account the dimensions of the mattresses and the shrinkage of the bed linen.

What are the dimensions of mattresses in hotels?

Mattresses used in hotels and tourist accommodation usually have standard sizes that are adapted to the different types of beds offered to guests. These sizes may vary from country to country or region to region, but in general they can be classified as follows:

  • Single mattresses: these are used for single or twin beds, which are usually 90 cm wide and 190 cm or 200 cm long.

  • Double mattresses: for double or full beds, which are usually 135 cm or 150 cm wide and 190 cm or 200 cm long.

  • Queen mattresses: used for queen beds, which are usually 160 cm or 180 cm wide and 200 cm long.

  • King mattresses: used for king beds, which are usually 200 cm wide and 200 cm long.

What are the dimensions of hotel mattress sheets?

Sheets used to cover hotel mattresses should be sized to fit the size of the mattress and to prevent them from moving or slipping off during sleep. Sheets can be divided into two types:

  • Fitted sheets: these are sheets that are placed directly on the mattress, covering all four sides. They can be with elastic bands, which have elastic corners that hook onto the mattress, or without elastic bands, which are larger and fold under the mattress.

  • Top sheets: these are placed on top of the fitted sheet, covering the top of the mattress. They are usually longer than the fitted sheet so that they can be folded over the sides and the foot of the bed.

The measurements of fitted sheets and top sheets depend on the size of the mattress, but also on the thickness or height of the mattress. Below you will find a table with the approximate measurements of the sheets for each type of mattress, taking into account an average thickness of 25 cm:

How to choose the right size for your hotel sheets?

When choosing the right size for your hotel sheets, there are several factors to take into account:

  • The size of the mattress: you should measure the width, length and thickness of the mattress to find out what size sheets you need. If the mattress is very thick, you may need fitted sheets with larger elastic bands or fitted sheets without elastic bands that can be folded neatly under the mattress. If the mattress is very long, you may need longer top sheets so that they can be folded over the foot of the bed.

  • Shrinkage of bed linen: you should be aware that bed sheets can shrink when washed, especially if they are made of cotton or if they are washed at high temperatures. For this reason, it is advisable to buy sheets that are slightly larger than you need, so that they remain the right size after washing. It is estimated that sheets can shrink between 5% and 10% after the first wash.

  • The quality of the sheets: you should choose good quality sheets that are strong, soft and durable. Cotton sheets are the most recommended for hotels, as they offer a feeling of freshness and comfort, as well as being hypoallergenic and breathable. You can also opt for other natural fibres such as linen or bamboo, or for blends of cotton and polyester, which are easier to iron and maintain.
